Newel Post & Railing Repair
A newel post is the sturdy post at the top or bottom of a staircase that anchors the handrail. When it starts to wobble, the whole railing feels unsafe. Many of these repairs are quick, clean and inexpensive, and I’ll tell you honestly when a post needs more than tightening.
What’s included:

Why newel posts get loose
Newel posts take a lot of daily force. People grab them, lean on them and pull themselves up with them. Over time, and with seasonal changes in wood and humidity, the hardware that holds the post to the floor works loose, and the post starts to rock.
How a base-bolt repair works
On the recent job shown below, the post was wobbling side to side at the base. The fix was simple but needs care:
- Remove the two wooden caps that cover the bolt holes at the base of the post
- Tighten the two mounting bolts underneath
- Check that the post is solid, with no side-to-side movement
- Put the wooden caps back so the post looks as it did before
The finished post looks the same, because the caps cover the holes again, but it no longer moves.
When tightening isn’t enough
If the hardware is stripped, the base or post is cracked, or the floor underneath has been damaged, tightening alone will not hold. In that case the post needs new hardware, reinforcement or replacement. I’ll assess it first and tell you plainly what the post needs before any work is done.

Newel Post & Railing Repair — common questions
Is a wobbly newel post dangerous?
It can be. People instinctively grab the post and handrail when they feel unsteady on stairs, and a loose post may not hold. It is worth fixing promptly, especially with children or older adults in the home.
How is a wobbly newel post repaired?
When the wobble comes from loose mounting hardware at the base, I remove the wooden caps over the bolt holes, tighten the bolts, and put the caps back. If the hardware is stripped or the post is cracked, it needs more than tightening, and I’ll explain the options first.
Will the repair be visible?
On a base-bolt repair, the wooden caps go back over the holes, so the finished post looks the way it did before.
Can you fix other loose parts of a stair railing?
Yes. I can look at loose balusters and handrails too during the same visit. Let me know what is loose when you book.
How much does a newel post repair cost?
Every job is priced individually after a free estimate, because it depends on what is causing the wobble and what the post is attached to.
