Cracks around windows: why they happen
Window corners are one of the most common places for drywall to crack. Houses settle and flex a little, the trim moves with the seasons, and Triangle humidity swings put moisture in and out of the wall and paint. A corner that was patched with only a thin layer of caulk or paint will usually crack again.
If paint is bubbling, peeling or spotting near a window, moisture is often the cause. I look for where it is coming from first, so the repair lasts instead of reappearing next season.
How I repair cracks around a window
A crack that keeps coming back needs more than filler. Here is the process I follow on window jobs like the recent one in Apex shown below:
- Cut out the damaged drywall and any loose material around the crack
- Secure the window trim so it stops moving
- Patch the opening
- Tape the seams so the repair holds
- Apply joint compound (mud) in several thin coats, letting each one dry
- Sand smooth between coats and at the end
- Repair chips or damage on the window sill
- Prime, then match the wall color
Doing it in thin coats with tape is what keeps the crack from telegraphing back through the paint.

Drywall Repair — common questions
Do you paint after patching the drywall?
I sand every patch smooth, prime it, and match the wall color so the repair blends in. Just mention it when we talk so I bring what’s needed.
Can you match textured walls or ceilings?
Yes — I match common textures like orange peel and knockdown so the repair blends into the surrounding surface.
How big of a hole can you fix?
From small nail and doorknob holes to large openings and full sections — including ceiling drywall.
Can you fix water-damaged drywall?
Yes, once the leak is resolved — I cut out the damaged area, patch it, and finish it smooth. If the leak is still active, that fix has to come first.
Why do cracks keep coming back around my windows?
Usually the trim is still moving, the crack was only filled or caulked instead of cut out and taped, or moisture is getting into the wall. I secure the trim, tape the repair, and build it up in coats so it stays put.
Can you repair the window sill and trim too?
Yes. On window crack jobs I secure the trim and repair chips or damage on the sill as part of the same visit, so the whole window area looks finished.
How long does a window crack repair take?
The patch is built up in thin coats of joint compound, and each coat has to dry before sanding, so the finish work is spread out rather than done in one pass. I’ll give you the schedule when I assess your job.
