One of the most common questions I hear from homeowners around Apex and the Triangle is simple: “Is this a handyman job, or do I need a contractor?” Getting it right saves you both money and headaches.
When to call a handyman
A handyman is your go-to for the wide range of small-to-medium jobs that keep a home running — the kind of things that don’t need permits or a crew. That includes:
- Mounting a TV, hanging shelves, or installing curtain rods
- Installing or replacing ceiling fans and light fixtures
- Patching drywall and touching up paint
- Assembling furniture
- Swapping out faucets, fixing a running toilet, or replacing a shutoff valve
- Replacing outlets and switches, or setting up smart-home devices
If your project is a single trade, a short list of repairs, or a “honey-do” list that’s been piling up, a handyman is almost always the faster, more affordable choice.
When to call a general contractor
A general contractor coordinates larger projects that involve multiple trades, structural work, or permits — think additions, full kitchen or bath remodels, or anything that changes the footprint of your home.
The simple rule of thumb
If the job is mostly about repairing, installing, or maintaining what’s already there, it’s a handyman job. If it’s about building or rebuilding something major, that’s contractor territory.
When you’re not sure, just ask. I’ll tell you honestly whether it’s something I can knock out — and if it’s truly a contractor-sized job, I’ll point you in the right direction.
