How Much Does a Handyman Cost in the Triangle? (2026 Price Guide)

If you’re staring at a to-do list and wondering what it’ll cost to finally get it all done, you’re asking the right question first. Most homeowners around Apex and the Triangle have no idea what a handyman should cost — partly because a lot of companies won’t tell you until you’re on the phone. So here’s a straight answer, no runaround.

The short version

Most single handyman jobs in the Triangle cost $75 to $300 in total — that’s the price for the whole job, not an hourly rate. Behind that number, I work at $60 an hour, or I’ll give you a flat price for the whole job when I can quote it up front. Small jobs have a minimum charge of about $75. Either way, you’ll know the total before I start the work, not after.

Hourly vs. flat-rate — which you’ll pay

For quick, predictable jobs — hanging a TV, swapping a light fixture, patching a small hole — I’ll usually give you a flat price so there are no surprises. For bigger or open-ended work where I can’t know the scope until I’m in it, I charge by the hour and keep you posted as we go. Either way, I tell you which one applies when I give the estimate.

A note on the “trip charge” you’ll see with some companies: I don’t add a separate one. The minimum charge on small jobs covers the drive and setup, and that’s it.

What common jobs cost

These are typical ranges for the Triangle. Your exact price depends on the specifics (more on that below), but this gets you in the ballpark:

JobTypical cost
Small job minimum$75
Ceiling fan replacement (wiring already there)$95 – $150
TV mounting (up to 55”)$100 – $175
TV over a fireplace / large TV (over 55”)$150 – $300
Light fixture swap$75 – $150
Faucet replacement$125 – $225
Toilet install$150 – $250
Furniture assembly$60 – $120 per item
Drywall patch (small hole)$100 – $200
Smart lock or video doorbell install$75 – $150
Window blinds or shutters$30 – $60 per window
Picture hanging, shelves, curtain rods$60 – $120

The item being installed — the fan, the mount, the blinds, the faucet itself — isn’t included in these prices. I ask that you have it on hand before I arrive, and I’ll take care of the installation. That keeps your cost down and lets you pick exactly the product you want.

What changes the price

Two identical-sounding jobs can land at different numbers. Here’s what moves it:

  • How the job’s set up. A fixture swapping in where one already exists is quick. Older hardware, a fixture in rough shape, or fasteners that fight back all add time.
  • Access and height. Two-story foyers, tight closets, and awkward angles add time.
  • Materials and condition. Old plaster, stripped screws, or a fixture that fights back all factor in.
  • How many jobs at once. This is the big one — knocking out five items in one visit is far cheaper per task than five separate trips. Bundle your list.

Why an independent is usually the better deal

The national franchises around here run $75–$100 an hour, because that rate covers a dispatcher, a franchise fee, and a rotating crew. With me, you’re not paying for any of that — and you get the same person every time, someone who remembers your house and stands behind the work. That’s how I keep quality high and prices fair.

Frequently asked questions

Do you charge for an estimate? No. Estimates are free, and for most jobs I can give you a number over a quick call or text with a photo.

Is there a minimum charge? Yes — small jobs have a minimum charge of about $75. That’s why it pays to save up a few tasks and do them in one visit.

Do you charge a trip or travel fee? No. The $75 minimum on small jobs already covers my drive and setup. Within my service area — Apex, Cary, Holly Springs, Morrisville, Fuquay-Varina, and Raleigh — there’s no separate trip charge.

Will the price change once you start? Only if we find something we couldn’t see up front (hidden damage, etc.) — and if that happens, I stop and talk to you before doing anything extra. No surprise line items.

What areas do you serve? Apex, Cary, Holly Springs, Morrisville, Fuquay-Varina, and Raleigh.
