Furniture Assembly Tips for Assembling IKEA Items (and When to Skip the Hassle)

IKEA furniture is a great value, but “great value” and “quick to assemble” aren’t always the same thing. A few habits make the difference between an afternoon well spent and a frustrating one.

Read through once before starting

It sounds obvious, but skimming the whole instruction booklet first — not just the current step — catches the moments where a part needs to go in before a panel gets closed up. Taking a piece back apart because a connector got sealed inside is one of the biggest time-wasters in flat-pack assembly.

Sort and count every part first

Lay out all the screws, dowels, and cam locks by type before starting. IKEA’s small parts look similar but usually aren’t interchangeable — mixing up two similar screws early on is how a piece ends up wobbly two steps later.

Don’t fully tighten until the end

Leave every screw slightly loose while building, then go back and tighten everything once the piece is fully assembled and square. Tightening as you go can lock a panel slightly out of alignment before you’ve had a chance to square it up.

Use a drill (carefully) for the repetitive screws

The included hex key works, but a cordless drill with the right bit turns a 45-minute job into 15 — just keep the torque setting low so you don’t strip the particleboard, which doesn’t forgive an overtightened screw the way real wood does.

Don’t skip the wall anchor

This is the step almost everyone skips, and it’s the one that matters most for safety. Dressers, bookcases, and tall wardrobes need to be anchored to the wall — most kits include the hardware. It takes five extra minutes and matters most in homes with kids.

When it’s worth hiring out

  • You’ve got multiple pieces to assemble, not just one
  • It’s a large item — wardrobes, bed frames, PAX closet systems
  • You want the wall anchoring done properly and the boxes hauled away
  • You’d rather spend the afternoon on literally anything else
